چکیده

Nearly all living organisms, including some bacterial species, exhibit biological processes with a period of about 24 h called circadian (from the Latin circa, about, dies, day) rhythms. These rhythms allow living organisms to anticipate the daily alternation of light and darkness. Experiments carried out in cyanobacteria have shown the adaptive value of circadian clocks. In these experiments a wild type cyanobacterial strain (with a 24 h circadian rhythm) and a mutant strain (with a longer or shorter period) grow in competition. In different experiments the external light dark cycle was changed in order to match the circadian period of the different strains, revealing that the strain whose circadian period matches the light-dark has a larger fitness. As a consequence the initial population of one strain grows while the other decays. These experiments were made under fixed light and dark intervals.

Biodiversity and seasonal variation of the cyanobacterial assemblage in a rice paddy field in Fujian, China.

Cyanobacteria are one of the main components of the microbiota in rice paddy fields and significantly contribute to its fertilization. The diversity and changes of the cyanobacterial assemblage were investigated during a rice growth season and after harvest in a paddy field located in Fujian Province, China. The cyanobacterial populations were analyzed by a semi-nested PCR, followed by denaturi...

Genetic variance in the composition of two functional groups (diazotrophs and cyanobacteria) from a hypersaline microbial mat.

Examination of variation in ecological communities can lead to an understanding of the forces that structure communities, the consequences of change at the ecosystem level, and the relevant scales involved. This study details spatial and seasonal variability in the composition of nitrogen-fixing and cyanobacterial (i.e., oxygenic photosynthetic) functional groups of a benthic, hypersaline micro...

Seasonal changes in leaf area of Amazon forests from leaf flushing and abscission

[1] A large increase in near-infrared (NIR) reflectance of Amazon forests during the light-rich dry season and a corresponding decrease during the light-poor wet season has been observed in satellite measurements. This increase has been variously interpreted as seasonal change in leaf area resulting from net leaf flushing in the dry season or net leaf abscission in the wet season, enhanced phot...

Phycocyanin, cyanobacterial antioxidant: structure, function and applications

Phycobilins, open-chain tetrapyrrole pigment molecules, serve as accessory photosynthetic light-harvesting pigments in red algae and cyanobacteria. Phycobilin pigments are covalently linked with proteins and formed phycobiliproteins are organized into large macromolecular complexes called phycobilisomes on the top of the thylakoid membranes. In deep water, only green light is available, thus ph...

A circadian signal of change of season in patients with seasonal affective disorder.

BACKGROUND In animals, the circadian pacemaker regulates seasonal changes in behavior by transmitting a signal of day length to other sites in the organism. The signal is expressed reciprocally in the duration of nocturnal melatonin secretion, which is longer in winter than in summer. We investigated whether such a signal could mediate the effects of change of season on patients with seasonal a...
